New Hampshire is often not considered a top place to paddle board in the United States. We understand why. It’s in the northern region of the country. Its season is short for SUP. And it’s a place where snowbirds flock to enjoy time on the slopes, carving up some white powder.
With that said, during the summer months, the beauty of this state shines in the sun. And even better, there are plenty of lakes and rivers to explore on your SUP that’ll leave you wondering why more people don’t visit.
In fact, we might even say that New Hampshire is the United States’ biggest kept secret in terms of paddle boarding launch locations. Ready to discover everything the state has to offer? Let’s get right into it.
Lake Winnipesaukee
Located in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, Lake Winnipesaukee is one of the largest and most popular lakes in the state. With over 250 miles of shoreline, it provides plenty of opportunities for paddling, including several public beaches and boat launches.
But what makes it land on our number one spot in New Hampshire are the views! Wow, they are spectacular. The calm lake opens up to sweeping mountain views covered in bright green pine trees with sandy beaches and so many miles of shoreline to explore. This place is a treat for the senses.
So much so that it’s considered the best vacation spot in the Lakes Region in New Hampshire. For that reason alone, we say if you have just one spot you can visit while in the state, head here. You won’t regret it.
Some of the best launch locations include Weirs Beach, Alton Bay, and Wolfeboro Bay. Check them out by clicking the links. Whichever place you choose though, you’re guaranteed a great time!

Squam Lake
Another popular destination in the Lakes Region, Squam Lake is a relatively shallow lake surrounded by wooded hills and mountains. With its calm waters and relatively shallow depths, this is the ideal spot for beginner paddlers to experience their first adventure somewhere unfamiliar.
The two combined characteristics of the lake enable beginners to have a safe time on the water. With it being calm you don’t have to worry about being pushed off your board by currents or heavy boat traffic. And if you do happen to fall off, the shallow water makes it easy to climb back on your board with ease.
There are several public boat launches, including the Ashland Town Beach and the Holderness Town Beach for easy access to the water.

Merrimack River
Our first river location in New Hampshire takes us to the Merrimack River. This river flows through the heart of New Hampshire, offering a scenic paddle experience with views of the surrounding hills and forests.
While there are stretches of the river characterized by moving currents, much of the water is calm and great for beginners and experienced paddlers alike.
The best launch locations include the Tyngsborough Bridge in Tyngsborough and the Boscawen Boat Launch in Boscawen.

Lamprey River
Are you into countryside views? Peaceful paddling? And maybe even some SUP fishing? If so, the Lamprey River is your go-to location. This beautiful stretch of water takes you through the countryside where you can see all that makes New Hampshire unique and beautiful.
Plus, if you bring a couple of polls and some tackle, you can try your luck at some SUP fishing while you’re there.
To get to the best launch location head to the Main Street Bridge in Newmarket.

Pemigewasset River
Okay, so we’ve covered the best beginner launches. The best lakes in New Hampshire. And a couple of the best rivers. But what if you’re an adventurous soul? Someone who craves a little more action? ANd someone who is an experienced paddler? If you meet these criteria, then you need to check out the Pemigewasset River.
While there are a few stretches of water here that are calm like our previous spots, there are also parts of the path that involve challenging rapids. And a whole lot of fun! If you’re into more difficult paddles or want a bit of a challenge, check out the Pemigewasset River.
The best launch location is the River Road Boat Launch in Henniker.
