In the minds of countless members of the stand-up paddle board (SUP) community, summer is simply the best time of year. With long days, warm nights, and some of the best weather of the entire calendar year, it just doesn’t get any better than this. Furthermore, when you factor in the importance of water temperature, especially for water sports and activities, summer is truly the standout season for all things outdoors. At the same time, however, you probably don’t want to go outside on the hottest days of the year, as this can lead to serious health concerns such as dehydration, heat stroke, and many, many more. With all of that in mind, we believe that the best days for paddling are somewhere in the middle of the summer temperature range – not too hot but not too cool either. So, without further ado, what is the best temperature for SUP-ing?
Best Weather Conditions for Paddle Boarding
Interestingly enough, according to the findings of the SUP community, a paddler’s temperature preference typically depends on their level of experience as well as their regular SUP activities. For example, a brand-new paddler who is mostly enjoying a leisurely pace is likely to favor warmer temperatures around 85 degrees Fahrenheit (29.5 degrees Celsius). Intermediate enthusiasts who are pushing a little bit harder, on the other hand, would rather keep things a bit cooler at 80 degrees Fahrenheit (26.5 degrees Celsius). Advanced paddle boarders who like to take things to the next level, meanwhile, are especially happy at 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius). Last but not least, expert SUP-ers feel at home in 60 degrees Fahrenheit (15 degrees Celsius).
Of course, all of this is subjective, as everyone’s sense of temperature is a little bit different. Even then, however, all of these numbers have proven to be accurate for most paddlers and their respective experience levels. So, with that in mind, we recommend using these as starting points and seeing how you feel. After all, you can always adjust your preferences based on your new and upcoming SUP experiences. In the end, you may find that you’re more comfortable at a temperature that’s significantly higher or lower than the average person in your experience level; and that is absolutely fine! The most important thing is to do whatever works best for you. Just remember to dress for the weather, stay hydrated, and protect yourself and those around you. As long as you do those things, you’re sure to have an amazing day on the water.
